A Day at the Orphanage
Today, we visited the orphanage, an experience I'd been anticipating for a long time. Waking up early, unable to sleep, I was filled with mixed emotions about what to expect. To be honest, I had some misconceptions about orphanages, imagining them to be places of poverty and neglect.
This preconceived notion quickly dissolved upon arrival.
The orphanage was large and well-maintained, and the children were polite and well-groomed. I was taken aback by my own preconceived ideas, realizing how uncultured and misinformed I had been.
Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed, and the first activity was a game of basketball. The kids were not only skilled players but also fluent in English, using slang and expressions effortlessly. Their natural ease and happiness in our presence made us feel at home.
We then gathered to hear the story of the orphanage. Founded in the 1940s after a volcanic eruption left many children orphaned, it has since been a sanctuary for countless children. Listening to the founder’s story, I was filled with admiration. I briefly wondered if I could ever do what he does, but I realized I lacked the same level of dedication and sacrifice. His commitment was inspiring.
When it was my turn to speak to the children, I wanted to strike a balance between being inspiring and keeping it fun. I remembered advice from Zhara, emphasizing that it shouldn't be about pity but about support and joy. Although the translation made it a bit challenging, the experience felt rewarding.
The highlight was handing out toys. The children’s excitement and interest in the toys were heartwarming. They played together, sharing and caring for each other like the most polite family I've ever seen. We also played a football match, which, despite injuring my foot, was incredibly fun and worth every moment.
The day was filled with various activities:
Games, playing guitar, and singing. Their musical talents, singing in harmonies, left me in awe. The cultural exposure was profound; these children were incredibly educated, some speaking multiple languages fluently, which was more than I had ever learned.
The sense of community and family among the children was touching. They looked after each other, creating a close-knit environment. Leaving must be a significant and emotional event for them.
Reflecting on the day
I felt a deep gratitude for our team and the experience. This visit not only allowed us to help but also enriched us culturally. It was humbling and eye-opening, making me eager to return and explore more ways to support them.
